Alberta Care-First: Education for General Insurance Agents and Brokers
Alberta’s Care-First auto insurance system takes effect January 1, 2027. This online, self-paced course helps general insurance agents and brokers understand the new system, explain coverage choices, and guide clients who have questions after an accident.
Why is this training mandatory?
The Alberta Insurance Council (AIC) requires agents and brokers to complete Care-First education so they understand their roles and responsibilities under the new system. The requirement applies to holders of General Level 1, General Level 2 and General Level 3 Designated Representative licences, including non-Alberta residents who hold an AIC licence.
The Government of Alberta expects agents and brokers who advise on or manage automobile insurance policies to complete the training by November 1, 2026, in preparation for policy renewals effective January 1, 2027. AIC requires all affected licensees to complete the course before renewing their licences in 2027. The annual licence renewal period runs from May 1 to June 30.
What does the course cover?
Work through six self-paced topics that build on one another:
- The purpose of Care-First and how the new system works
- Care and treatment benefits, including the Program of Care and optional top-up coverage
- Income replacement, other financial supports, and permanent impairment benefits
- The ability to sue and third-party liability
- How to guide injured Albertans through the claims process
- The Care-First dispute resolution process
You’ll learn how to discuss coverage choices before an accident, explain the support available afterward, and direct clients to the right resources when a question falls outside your role. Each topic includes an assessment to check your understanding.
Continuing education and member access
Completion of this mandatory course satisfies Alberta’s annual CE requirement. Agents and brokers who are normally exempt from CE must still complete the Care-First training.
