Ontario Accident Benefits Reform
Ontario’s July 1, 2026 accident benefits reform represents one of the most significant structural changes to auto insurance in recent years. The reform replaces the traditional standardized accident benefits model with a system that combines mandatory benefits with a wide range of optional coverages that consumers must actively elect.
This course is designed for insurance professionals who want to understand the practical implications of the new optional accident benefits framework and strengthen their advisory practices in a higher-risk environment.
The course begins with a review of the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS) and how accident benefits function within the Ontario Automobile Policy. It then examines how the reform introduces optional benefits, changes policy documentation requirements, and alters the way coverage must be explained to clients.
Learners explore the real-world impact of optional benefits including income replacement, caregiver benefits, housekeeping and home maintenance benefits, and death and funeral benefits. The course also reviews common consumer misconceptions, coverage gaps, and situations where declining optional benefits can create significant financial exposure after a serious injury.
Particular emphasis is placed on the advisor’s role in supporting informed client decisions. Documentation practices, clear explanation of coverage consequences, and defensible advisory processes are addressed to help reduce E&O exposure under the new system.
