Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway reports a US$1.5B Q1 loss

Warren Buffett's company reported a US$1.5-billion first-quarter loss as it wrote down its ConocoPhillips investment and unrealized derivative losses helped drag Berkshire Hathaway's results below last year's roughly $900-million profit.

Berkshire Hathaway Inc. said it recorded a loss of $990 per share in this year's quarter. In the same period a year earlier, the Omaha-based company reported $607 net income per class A share.
Buffett already acknowledged making a major mistake by buying a large amount of ConocoPhillips stock when oil and gas prices were near their peak last year.

Berkshire says it sold 13.7 million of its 79.9 million shares of ConocoPhillips during the first quarter to generate a loss that can offset past capital gains taxes.

U.S. government sets June 8 deadline for banks' capital plan

The biggest U.S. banks that are found to need more capital after government stress tests will have one month to come up with a plan to raise the additional resources.

The U.S. government says that after the results of the stress tests are released Thursday, the banks found to need more capital will have until June 8 to get a plan approved by their regulators.

The deadline was included in a joint statement released by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke and Sheila Bair, head of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

June 1 - Important changes to Life and A&S Continuing Education in Manitoba

The following is a notice from The Insurance Council of Manitoba. All Life and A&S Agents in Manitoba should be aware of the changes in the continuing education definition.

Please note there has been a change in regulation and effective June 1, 2009 the definition of allowable continuing education (CE) credit hours for Life and Accident & Sickness agents will change. Additional information including a new application will be available shortly, and further information will also be posted on Council’s website when available.

Continuing Education Definition

Continuing education for a Life and/or Accident and Sickness licensee must be directly related to life and accident and sickness insurance products or services, or the operation of an insurance business.

A maximum of 5 CE credits of the required 15 may be related to segregated funds. This maximum of 5 may include investment related education if it is directly applicable and relevant to segregated funds.

Content excluded from allowable CE credits are programs based on sales production, promotion, motivation, computer training, and any education not related to products or activity for which the license is held.

Allowable content would include ethics, errors and omissions coverage and compliance with insurance related legislation and regulatory requirements both Provincial (Manitoba) and Federal (e.g. Code of Conduct, the Insurance Act, Rules and Regulations, privacy legislation, anti-terrorism or money laundering legislation, and replacement requirements).

For more information, visit the Insurance Council of Manitoba's web site.

What a difference a year makes - gas prices

In June 2008, we gave you a peek at the pumps around the world. Gas prices seemed to be at an all-time high and no one was too sure when – if ever – there’d be relief.

Fast-forward 11 months to today, and some experts believe that this summer, gas is likely to stay below $1 per litre.

Roger McKnight, senior petroleum analyst with En-Pro International told the CBC that he foresees pieces in the 98 cent range for the rest of the month, with prices varying between low 90s and high 80s throughout June, July and August.

ILScorp tracked down recent gas prices to compare them to how they were in June 2008.
